Every year, there are quite a few geeky events that we, as a community, really look forward to, happening locally and internationally, but the big daddies of 'em all are E3 and SDCC. And while E3 was one of the best in years, I feel like SDCC 2018 was pretty lackluster. I mean, it wasn't bad, but it didn't blow me away like it used to do every year. But even though I personally didn't dig it, we know there's a little bit of something for everyone so we put together a quick list of things that went down at the 2018 San Diego Comic Con.
Comics
Grant Morrison is going to reboot Green Lantern. That's going to be reeeaaaallly interesting.
Marvel Knights relaunches with Donny Cates at the helm, starting with MK20 #1 in November.
Shuri is going to get her own title. Remember, this is comic book Shuri, not movie Shuri - which means she was, at one point, the Queen of Wakanda and holder of the Black Panther mantle. But for sure, they're putting in bits and pieces that the movie made popular in this title. Feels like this comic book is an attempt to ride on the popularity of the massively successful Black Panther.
Dynamite is going to launch Rainbow Brite and Miss Fury
Comixology Originals getting a second wave
Dark Horse is releasing Tom Clancy's The Division comic book series, which I kinda dig.
Marvel's Jessica Jones is getting a digital-first, which is intersting. Hopefully, this is successful enough that Marvel takes their comics into the digital distribution age, in a Netflix-style pricing scheme. The first issue is already available on Comixology for $5.
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Shattered Grid is looking hella epic.
New Shazam title coming in November, care of Geoff Johns
Marc Silvestri's Batman Project revealed
The Vision with Chelsea Cain
Go-Bots is back after years!
X-Men B lack and Uncanny X-Men
Movies
The Aquaman and Shazam! movie trailers were revealed.
Fantastic Beasts sequel is out. Didn't care for the first one. I literally fell asleep, but second one is looking better.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is looking promising.
And M. Night Shyamalan's Glass, and this has a bunch of people pumped.
Steven Universe is also getting a movie, which I find trippy.
We also saw what the live action version fo Kim Possible is going to look like. Pretty accurate, I'd say.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse revealed three new Spider-people being involved in the mix - Noir (to be voiced by Nicolas Cage), Spider-Ham, and Peni Parker.
James Gunn got canned from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and that's kind of a bummer. You can read the full story here.
Oh and the Decepticon that had Starscream's color palette isn't actually Starscream. It's apparently Blitzwing. Man, the TF groups on Facebook were soooo salty after that reveal.
Venom confirms that he'll be going up against other symbiotes including Riot.
TV
Star Wars Clone Wars is back. I saw a couple episodes of the previous runs and they were pretty good. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan so I didn't follow it, but I dig it.
Was never a big Dr. Who fan but the trailer is out and those I know who are fans are giddy about it.
I liked The Titans trailer while a bunch of other DC peeps didn't because Dick was being a massive asshole and that's not how they see the character. I can understand why that'd be jarring for them.
Castle Rock is the show that Marc Bernardin has been working on so I'm kinda stoked for it.
We also saw the debut of Matt Groening's Disenchantment, aka female Bart in medieval times.
Star Trek: Discovery showed off a new trailer
Iron Fist season 2 is coming after Luke Cage. Still not totally digging it.
Panther's Quest on Disney XD!
Young Justice: Outsiders
Gaming
Spider-Man was the biggest gaming thing over at SDCC 2018. Gameplay trailer and new console revealed.
Marvel is doing all the games on all the platforms, especially VR and mobile with Marvel Strike Force, a turn based mobile game, and Marvel Powers United VR and a bunch of other things like Marvel Puzzle Quest.
Other than that, there wasn't much. Nintendo showed off Brawl and some other games. Bandai Namco did, too. And I think there was something about Call of Duty Zombies. But gaming stuff wasn't front and center for SDCC this year.
Toys
There as a ton of toy news from SDCC 2018,, so I just compiled a few of my favorites.
Foot Soldier from the 90's TMNT revealed. Image and details from Toyark.
Bishoujo Baroness and Scarlett revealed. Image and details at Hisstank.
I'm thankful I never really got into Transformers because the toys revealed at SDCC 2018 were pretty drool-worthy. Cyberverse new wave revealed. Images and details at TFW.
Transformers SIEGE from the War for Cybertron trilogy and they're some of the best looking TF figures I've ever seen produced by Hasbro. I'm kinda glad I'm not a collector. There's no way I'd be able to afford all of these. Images and details found at TFW. The Hound, Ultra Magnus and Iron Hide look particularly awesome.
More from TF - we've got the Generations line was on display. Images and details at TFW.
NECA revealed unmarked Predator. Images and details at Toyark.
And those who know me know that my jam used to be Marvel Legends. I'm kicking myself over the new ones coming out because they all look so good.
