Official GeekOut.ph Android App Available!

Details

Due to our efforts to change with the times and stay relevant, we decided it was time to diversify from the traditional way content is consumed on the web and step into the mobile space. It is, after all, the future! This is why we came up with this. It is my pleasure to introduce the NEW OFFICIAL GEEKOUT.PH ANDROID APP! You may now download the GeekOut.ph Android app, which was carefully and lovingly made for all four of you who will actually download and use this thing. Thanks, guys. You're the best.

Okay, so we just used a free app builder online, but hey, it's better than nothing! Thanks to our friend from Bacontunamelt for building it for us!

The app is really simple; it downloads new GeekOut.ph content so you can read them off your phone! Think about, it'd be perfect for killing 10 minutes while in the loo.

That, in itself, is pretty cool already but there's more - the app offers you complete control over the way the content is shown and delivered to you. View either in list or grid form at the tap of a button. You can set images to be downloaded or not on 3G, which is especially useful if you're on a volume capped plan. You can choose to download everything via WiFi only. You can set updates every 24 hours, if you want automatic updating, which is also optional.

Admittedly, notifications can get a little bothersome. Good thing you can also set those up, too, with either vibration or a sound or none at all. Should you be so inclined, you may also change your theme (our default is black) to the lighter one.

Here's a nice tool to play around with. Go to Settings -> Display & Presentation, then scroll to the very bottom to Display Toolbar Buttons. Our defaults are previous article, favorite, open in browser, delete article (from your feed), share and next article. The Display Toolbar Buttons option lets you customize those buttons. You can add FB and Twitter, if you want. Pretty nifty stuff.

If you're having trouble with the settings, leave a comment and I'll help you out.

Here's how to download and install it.

1. First, go to your applications settings and tick "Unknown Sources," which will allow you to install apps that aren't on the Android Market. Typically, it's found under settings->applications. You can untick it after you've installed the app if you feel uneasy with it being on.

2. You may click here to download, or if you have your Android phone handy, just scan this QR code.

3. If your Android asks you to select a browser, I'd recommend you use the default Android browser. I've tried it on Dolphin Mini and Opera Mini, and installing it becomes a bit of pain because you have to find it with an Easy Installer app after you've downloaded it. Using the default browser, the OS will just show the download progress in your notification page. Once the download completes, simply click to install.

If you're having trouble installing it, let us know in the comments and we'll help you out!

Thank you, everyone! To make it a little bit more interesting, I'm thinking of rewarding one lucky person who actually took the time to install the app, just dunno how much of a prize I can give just yet, though. Maybe Art of Dave Struzan? I'll keep you posted!
