One of the bigger geek conventions in our little region of the world is the Singapore Toy, Game, & Comic Convention. It's happening on September 8-9, 2018, and this year, they're bringing the heat. There's going to be tons of cosplay, eSports hype, and a lot of special guests. And there's going to be a little more attention given to the gaming community, which is always a good thing.
Here's their guest line-up:
Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development
Ryan has been with Marvel Studios since 2008's Iron Man, helping design the look and feel of the MCU. He helped shape it all. This guy legit worked on a number of MCU films, including Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Black Panther. It's going to be really exciting picking his brain.
He studied Industrial Design at the University of Notre Dame and Illustration at the Art Centre College of Design. In his last semester, he decided to leave school to work on a project with Iain McCaig, and this led to him meeting Jon Favreau. When talent meets luck, the MCU gets made. Jon put him tow ork on Iron Man as an illustrator and Ryan would eventually become Iron Man 2's lead character designer. Side note - one of my most favorite Iron Man suits is the Mk. VI. Just saying.
David Finch, Comic Book Artist
I've actually already met David Finch when he came to Manila. Fully Booked gave us the chance to hang out and talk to him for a little bit. He's worked on Moon Knight, Ultimatum, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Avengers.
Mark Brooks, Comic Book Illustrator and Designer
Even if you don't immediately know the name of Mark Brooks, I'm pretty sure you've seen his art if you've been paying any kind of attention to any pop culture in the last few years. He's the cover artist for Marvel's X-Men: eXtermination and DC's Detective Comics. And before that, he was the cover artist for Marvel's Secret Empire.
Sideshow Collectibles has produced a Mark Brooks signature series for Spider-Verse characters like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man, and Silk and they look badass.
He's done covers for Avengers: No Surrender, Ant-Man, Fearless Defenders, and X-Men Legacy. He's done panels for Uncanny X-Force, Thor, Avengers & X-Men: Consequences, Amazing Spider-Man, Young Avengers, and a bunch of other titles. You've also probably seen his work with Hasbro, Lucasfilm, Disney, Capcom and SEGA in properties such as Transformers, Robotech, and Street Fighter.
Range Murata, Character Designer, Illustrator, Product Designer, and just all-around awesome Artist
Range started his artistic career as a character designer for Atlus, working on Power Instinct in 1993. He started to really shine in 1994, though, with cover illustrations for Comic Kairakuten (Wanimagazine) and Ultra Jump (Shueisha). In 1996, he went freelance and released his first artbook 『LIKE A BALANCE LIFE』. And in 1999, he released a a fully colored comic magazine, 『FLAT』, which bagged him the 34th Japan Books Awards in the Comics category. He would go on to win another award at the 38th Japan Books Awards for his second art book, 『futurhythm』, which also won the 37th Seiun Award in 2007. So, yeah, this guy has done much more in 8 years than most of us have done in our lifetime.
He started gaining more popularity around the world with his full color comic, 『robot』. In 2010, he released another artbook, but this time on his animation work『PRISMTONE RANGE MURATA ANIME WORKS 1998-2006』(Wanimagazine).
Some of his other projects include OVA “Blue Submarine No.6”, TV Anime “LASTEXILE”, TV Anime “LASTEXILE – Fam, The Silver Wing”, and TV Anime “Shangri-La” by GONZO, and Anime ID-0 (SANZIGEN).
YUC'e, Muscian
A multi-talented muscian, YUC'e composes, writes, performs, sings, and mixes her own stuff. She released her self-published album last October, 2017, with her hit song "Future Cake" topping the Viral Chart on Spotify for 11 days. That's saying something.
These days, she's keeping herself busy remixing music for anime such as Bakemonogatari and Aikatsu!, and for artists such as m-flo and Deen Fujioka. She has also provided songs and vocals for beatmania IIDX and CHUNITHM. Not only is she active in the Tokyo music scene, she also been touring - recently in Chicago and LA for the Anime Expo last year.
