Reviewed on the PS4 by Steef, check out his page!
Steef is a longtime Soulcalibur player (like a loooong time). He's a big time fan so it was a great fit for him to be the one to review Soulcalibur VI for us.
Quick Hits
Options
- Lots of customization options. Type B is the default layout for arcade stciks.
- Go Japanese voice acting for full weeb
- Great support for legacy controllers, great for people who haven't upgraded their fight sticks
Roster
- Has all characters from Soulcalibur 2 to 4, so there's a good chance your favorite is there if you're a long time player
- Few omissions but hopefully, they're added in eventually
- Geralt of Rivia is the guest character and is joined by two newcomers
- Geralt is a good fit for the series
Movement
- Way more fluid than recent games
- Movement is more similar to Soulcalibur 2 with the 8 way run mechanic
- 8-way movement means freedom in all 8 directions with the joystick
Inputs
- Stringing together moves is still very similar to the old games
- Some move inputs have been changed
- Good to use training mode to learn the changes
Gameplay Changes
- Reversal Edge is a rock-paper-scissors guessing mini-game, which is way deeper than initially thought
- Throw break can be done by one button, which lessens the strategy of the game
EDIT: There's another throw option!
- Guard Impact doesn't use meter anymore, but only has f+G as input and has seemingly longer active duration
- Soul Charge is back from older games. New input is b+A+B+K
- Critical Edge is back but with a new input. It's no longer QCFx2 +A+B+K. It's just A+B+K now.
- Combat Lessons has a lot of tips
Create A Soul
- Create a new character or customize an existing character
- Lots of great options
- If you have the season pass, you get even more customization
- Libra of Soul is the story mode for custom characters and is a very text-heavy story mode at that
Story Mode
- Heavily text based, as well
- Puts you against some random characters
Does Steef Recommend It?
Yes, totally.
Gameplay - Easy for newcomers to explore and get into. It has new mechanics that veterans need to learn to utilize.
Presentation - Falls a bit short due to text based story stuff but looks and sounds great still
Value - So much content
